Finding Gratitude in the Chaos: Thriving Through Holiday Gatherings

Gratitude: The Power to Transform

Wayne Dyer once said, “Gratitude is the free expression of the heart and an understanding that you are not going to get it all, but you have it all already.”

Gratitude has the power to shift your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right. It’s not about pretending everything is perfect—it’s about finding beauty in the imperfections.

When Auntie Edna shares her annual negative “back in my day” speech or the mashed potatoes come out lumpy, gratitude reminds us that these moments are fleeting, that they carry lessons, and that, perhaps, they even offer humor.

Gratitude also works hand in hand with forgiveness. It helps us soften the hard edges of resentment and allows us to reframe difficult interactions as opportunities to grow.

Family Gatherings: Becoming the Thermostat

Family gatherings can test even the most patient among us. You may find yourself face-to-face with the one family member who knows how to push every button.

Here’s a mindset shift: Instead of matching the negativity around you, think of yourself as a thermostat. A thermostat doesn’t reflect the room’s temperature—it sets it.

Bring your calm, your kindness, and your gratitude into the room. Let yourself be the light that raises the energy, not the mirror that reflects tension.

And remember, if things get too overwhelming, it’s okay to step away. Sometimes the most graceful response is knowing when to recharge.

Hoʻoponopono: Healing Through Forgiveness

In challenging relationships, the Hawaiian practice of Hoʻoponopono can be a transformative tool. This practice is about freeing yourself from the emotional weight of anger, resentment, or frustration by offering forgiveness—not just for others, but for yourself.

Here’s how it works:

  • “I’m sorry” — Acknowledge the thoughts or feelings you’ve been holding toward someone. Whether it’s anger, judgment, or hurt, this step is about taking responsibility for your part in the emotional energy.

  • “Please forgive me” — Ask for forgiveness—not necessarily from the other person, but from the universe or yourself—for holding onto negativity.

  • “Thank you” — Express gratitude for the opportunity to grow and learn through this experience.

  • “I love you” — Affirm the connection that exists, even in challenging relationships, and choose love over resentment.

Hoʻoponopono isn’t about excusing bad behavior or denying your feelings. It’s about letting go of the heavy emotional baggage so you can move forward with a lighter heart.

Stepping Into the Season With Grace

This holiday season, you have a choice. You can be swept up in the stress, or you can rise above it. Gratitude and forgiveness are your tools. They don’t make the chaos disappear, but they allow you to navigate it with grace and strength.

If you’re looking for a moment to step away and reset, I’ve created a special guided meditation to help you release tension, heal relationships, and recharge your spirit. This meditation incorporates Hoʻoponopono and is a gentle reminder that peace and gratitude are always within reach.

You can access the meditation through the link below—it’s my gift to you this season.
