You’ve been diagnosed with cancer. Now what?

Having personally walked the path of a cancer diagnosis and emerged on the other side, I share a few insights with you that I gained through my experience, hoping they may help guide and support you through your unique journey. While our journeys may not be alike, these are a few things I learned and share with you, hoping to bring a little comfort and understanding to the path that lies ahead.

First and foremost, it's okay to feel a whirlwind of emotions right now – fear, confusion, anger, sadness. Your feelings are valid, and it's crucial to acknowledge and express them. I want you to know that you are not navigating this healing journey solo; think of it as a rollercoaster ride with friends, family, and medical professionals eagerly hopping on board. It's a journey that no one wishes for, but please remember that you are not alone. An entire army has your back, and they've committed to the unpredictable twists and turns that may come your way. Now, here's the fun part – if you ever feel the need to release a cathartic cry, let out a scream into the abyss, or even take a swing at a punching bag, go ahead; consider it your personalized therapy session. And guess what? Laughter is a must – because, in the midst of unexpected ups and downs, a sprinkle of humor is your secret weapon for navigating this rollercoaster with flair.

Here's a friendly piece of advice that became my trusty companion on my cancer journey: tread lightly when venturing into the realm of Dr. Google. The internet, much like a vast sea, is brimming with information. While knowledge is undeniably empowering, it's equally crucial not to let it morph into a breeding ground for unnecessary anxiety. Remember, each person's dance with cancer is a unique choreography, and drawing comparisons with others online might unintentionally crank up the stress meter. So, consider this a gentle reminder to surf the web waves with caution and discernment.

Human nature often drives us to seek answers and attempt to predict the future, especially when faced with the uncertainties of a cancer diagnosis. However, it's crucial not to fabricate stories about the unknown. Instead, center your focus on concrete information – the facts presented by your healthcare team. These professionals, including traditional medical experts and holistic doctors, are your guides through the complex terrain of your medical journey, and trusting their expertise is paramount.

If questions or uncertainties persist, don't hesitate to ask your healthcare team for clarification. Their role is not only to provide medical care but also to ensure you understand and feel comfortable with the information presented. Moreover, should you encounter situations where your deep feelings or instincts appear to contradict the advice of the experts you are working with, grant yourself the permission to seek second, third, or even more opinions from other leading experts, including those in holistic medicine. Your well-being is of the utmost importance, and having a comprehensive understanding from multiple perspectives can empower you to make informed decisions about your health.

One of the most powerful tools you possess is your mindset. Your thoughts have the incredible ability to shape your reality. Instead of dwelling on the uncertainties, channel your energy into positive thoughts. As you embark on this challenging journey, it's important to recognize that, much like any significant life decision, you will encounter a multitude of voices offering advice and opinions. From cancer treatments and recovery strategies to everyday lifestyle choices, the sheer volume of suggestions can be overwhelming. These very words I offer you now, too, fall into the category of well-intentioned guidance.

Throughout my cancer journey, I discovered that people can be just as passionate and assertive about their healthcare recommendations as church missionaries advocating their beliefs. The parallels between the two lie in the diversity of perspectives and the fervor with which they are shared.

You may find that well-meaning individuals, fueled by their own experiences or beliefs, will express strong opinions on what you should or shouldn't do. They might recommend specific treatments, recovery methods, or lifestyle changes with unwavering conviction. While their input comes from a place of care and concern, it's crucial to remember that this is your life, your body, and only you can make the decisions that feel right for you.

My advice is to approach each piece of advice with gratitude. Listen carefully, thank them for sharing their insights, and acknowledge the concern behind their words. However, resist the pressure to conform to someone else's path without thorough consideration.

Much like the array of religious beliefs or non-beliefs, the spectrum of healthcare choices is vast. Whether you choose a traditional medical approach, opt for holistic treatments, or explore a combination of both, it's a deeply personal decision. Just as one might decide to adhere to a specific religion, reject all religious affiliations, or identify as an atheist, the choices you make in your cancer journey are uniquely yours.

Amidst the diversity of opinions, I encourage you to conduct your own research. Take the time to gather information, consult with medical professionals, and weigh the pros and cons of each option. Trust your instincts and prioritize what aligns with your values, beliefs, and comfort.

In the end, this journey is about finding the path that resonates with you. It's about making informed decisions that empower you and contribute to your well-being. Embrace the support and advice offered, but remember that the ultimate authority over your choices rests within you.

Remember, it's okay to seek help when needed – emotionally, mentally, and physically. There is strength in vulnerability, and reaching out to others or joining support groups can provide a sense of connection and understanding. This journey will test your resilience, but it will also unveil the depth of your courage and the strength within. Take it one step at a time, celebrate the small victories, and know that you are not defined by your diagnosis.
