Before Self-Love, There’s Self-Trust: A Journey Through Uncertainty, Intuition, and Inner Peace
We talk a lot about self-love, but can we truly love ourselves if we don’t trust ourselves first?
This question hit home for me recently in a deeply personal and emotional way. As I cared for my mom in her last weeks, I realized how much self-trust has shaped not only how I show up for others, but also how I show up for myself.
Today, I want to share a story with you. One that speaks to the strength found in listening to that quiet inner voice, the courage to sit with uncertainty, and the peace that comes when we trust the unfolding of life—even when it doesn’t make sense.
What is Self-Trust, Really?
Self-trust is more than a buzzword. It’s the foundation of every meaningful relationship—especially the one we have with ourselves. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present. It’s showing up, again and again, honoring our instincts, our needs, and our values—even when the path isn’t clear.
Without self-trust, we second-guess, overthink, and look outward for validation. But when we trust ourselves, we move through life with greater clarity, confidence, and peace.
A Personal Moment of Trusting the Unknown
A few weeks ago, I flew from Hawaii to Utah to visit my in-laws and planned to see my parents soon after. But the day I landed, everything changed. My mom was hospitalized with dangerously low oxygen levels, and just days later, she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
I wanted to rush to her side. My heart ached to be there. But my parents—especially my mom—insisted I stay put. They didn’t want me to come. I felt torn, confused, and emotionally flooded.
That’s when I turned inward and trusted myself.
Something told me to wait. And so I did.
Days later, on the very morning I had planned to drive down, my mom was discharged. My timing was perfect. Not because I planned it that way, but because I trusted the whispers of my intuition. I arrived exactly when I was most needed—to advocate for her care, provide comfort, and take over as her primary caregiver for nearly two weeks.
The Deep Peace of Self-Trust
Those days were tender, raw, and real. But I didn’t abandon myself in the process. I kept my daily promises—morning yoga, quiet coffee time, deep breaths, and loving boundaries. I wasn’t just showing up for my mom. I was showing up for me.
And as I sat with her, watching her trust the unknown with grace and ease, I learned what peace really looks like.
She’s not afraid. She knows she will be held by the unseen, reunited with loved ones who’ve passed. That unwavering trust has softened her experience and inspired mine.
How to Build Self-Trust (One Promise at a Time)
Self-trust doesn’t arrive overnight—it’s built, gently, step by step. Here are a few ways to begin:
Keep Your Promises to Yourself. Even the small ones. They matter.
Listen to Your Intuition. Your body knows. Tune in.
Forgive Past Betrayals. Even the times you abandoned yourself. Start fresh.
Set Boundaries with Love. Say no when your soul needs a yes to yourself.
Practice Self-Compassion. You don’t need to feel perfect to be trustworthy.
Trust the Unknown. Sometimes the clearest answers come when we release control.
A Loving Invitation
So, friends—where do you stand with self-trust today? Is there a promise—big or small—you can make and keep this week?
Maybe it’s waking up early to journal. Or simply saying, “I trust myself” and meaning it. That small act can shift everything.
Because when you trust yourself, you create a life led by intuition, not fear. By alignment, not pressure. By peace, not perfection.
As I navigated the final chapter of my mom’s life, I found comfort in that trust—in her, in myself, and in the mysterious unfolding of it all.
You don’t need to have all the answers. You only need to take the next step, guided by that quiet, wise voice within.
Trust you. You’ve got this!
